Why Is My Ice Maker Making Small Ice Cubes?

1. Mineral Buildup on Freezing Rods (Most Common)

The single most common cause of gradually shrinking ice cube size is mineral scale buildup on the freezing rods. As calcium and magnesium from tap water deposit onto the metal rods, they create an insulating layer that reduces heat transfer efficiency. The rods can't get as cold as they need to, and less water freezes during each cycle — resulting in smaller, thinner cubes.

How to tell if this is your issue: Ice was full-size when the machine was new and has gradually gotten smaller over weeks or months. There may be visible white deposits inside the machine or on the rods.

Fix: Run a full deep clean with citric acid solution. In most cases, ice size improves noticeably within the first cycle after cleaning. If you're in a hard water area, clean more frequently (weekly) to prevent recurrence.

2. Water Temperature Is Too Warm

The temperature of the water you add to the reservoir directly affects how much the freezing rods can freeze per cycle. Warm or room-temperature water requires more cooling energy from the compressor, reducing how much ice forms before the cycle completes.

Fix: Use cold tap water or chilled filtered water. Avoid adding warm, hot, or room-temperature water. If your tap water runs warm in summer, run the cold tap for 30 seconds before filling to get the coldest available water.

3. High Ambient Room Temperature

When the room temperature is high (above 85°F), the compressor has to work harder to achieve the same cooling effect. This reduces the temperature differential on the freezing rods, resulting in less water freezing per cycle and smaller ice cubes.

Fix: Move the machine to a cooler location. If this isn't possible, run the machine in the morning or evening when temperatures are lower. In summer months, placing the machine near an air conditioning vent can help.

4. Water Level Is Too Low

The freezing mechanism works by submerging or contacting the freezing rods with water. If the water level is low, the rods are only partially submerged, producing shorter, thinner ice cubes.

Fix: Always fill to the MAX line before starting a batch. Don't let the machine run to near-empty — refill proactively to maintain consistent ice cube size.

5. Ice Size Setting Is on Small

All EUHOMY ice makers have a size selector (typically a button on the control panel) that switches between small and large ice cubes. The setting is sometimes accidentally changed.

Fix: Check that the size setting is on LARGE. The large setting runs a longer freezing cycle, producing bigger cubes. This is such a simple check that it's worth confirming first before investigating other causes.

6. Blocked Ventilation

The machine's ventilation grilles allow the compressor to expel heat. If these are blocked, the machine runs hotter than designed and the compressor's cooling capacity is reduced — producing smaller ice.

Fix: Ensure 4–6 inches of clearance on all sides. Clean dust from ventilation grilles. Avoid placing in enclosed cabinets or against walls.
